A Treasure Trove of Baseball History Uncovered

, by David Riska, 1 min reading time

In a heartwarming intersection of family legacy and sports Baseball history, a man from Sacramento made an astonishing discovery in his late father's closet. Hidden away in a tin cigarette box, he found a collection of over 600 pre-war baseball cards, including rare finds like 20 Babe Ruth cards, cards of Ty Cobb, and “Shoeless” Joe Jackson. This collection, started by his father Ed in the early 1920s, also features hall-of-famers Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, and members of the 1919 Chicago “Black Sox” team.

Ed, a resident of Oakland during the 1920s, began his collection in adolescence, receiving these cards as gifts. He meticulously preserved them in a 1900s-era Pedro Cut Plug Tobacco tin. His son, John, upon discovering these cards while clearing out his father's house, was unaware of their rarity and significance. The collection, which includes cards from 1919 to 1926, also features the unique “Zee-Nuts” cards, distributed exclusively on the West Coast with a 1920s snack.

The discovery, which came as a shock even to the auction experts at Auction Monthly, is a remarkable slice of baseball history. The sports card collection, valued in the high six figures, is a testament to the enduring appeal of baseball memorabilia and the unexpected treasures that can be found in family heirlooms.
